CSCL: Japan Adopts Ban on 138 PFAS Compounds

On November 15, 2024, Japan officially adopted the Ministerial Ordinance No 4 banning 138 Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) under the Chemical Substance Control Law (CSCL). This follows the draft proposal jointly issued by three Japanese ministries on September 9, 2024. Full substance list can be found here.
The adopted ordinance designates these PFAS compounds as Class I Specified Chemical Substances, prohibiting their manufacture, import, and use. This decisive action aligns with Japan's commitment to environmental protection and public health, particularly in controlling persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
The ban will take effect on January 10, 2025, giving companies a short transition period to adjust their practices. Affected industries are urged to swiftly find alternatives and modify their product formulations to ensure compliance with these new regulations.
