ECHA Advances Work on Proposed PFAS Restriction

March 12, 2026

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has taken an important step forward in the regulatory process for per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). ECHA’s Committee for Socio‑Economic Analysis (SEAC) has agreed its draft opinion on the proposed EU‑wide restriction covering the manufacture, placing on the market, and use of PFAS.
The draft opinion is based on an extensive assessment of the socio‑economic impacts of a potential PFAS restriction, including an evaluation of costs, benefits, and the availability of alternatives. SEAC’s work builds on the restriction proposal submitted by authorities from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, which addresses all PFAS and all uses.
This development follows the adoption of the final opinion by ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) in early March, which focused on the risks PFAS pose to human health and the environment.
As a next step, SEAC’s draft opinion will be published for a 60‑day public consultation, allowing stakeholders to provide additional input. After reviewing relevant feedback, SEAC is expected to adopt its final opinion by the end of 2026. Both final committee opinions will then be submitted to the European Commission, which will decide on the way forward under the REACH regulatory process.
