EU Lowers PFOS Limits to Align with PFOA

December 03, 2025

Effective December 3, 2025, Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/718 has implemented stricter controls on perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and its derivatives. The amendment lowers the permissible unintentional trace contamination limits to align with existing standards for PFOA:

  • PFOS and salts: Maximum 0.025 mg/kg (0.0000025% w/w).
  • PFOS-related compounds: Maximum 1 mg/kg (0.0001% w/w) for the sum of all compounds.

The regulation also removes the exemption for mist suppressants in hard chromium plating. Compliance Data eXchange (CDX) has already updated its EU POPs module to reflect these revised thresholds.
Full details are available in the official Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/718.
