Rail Industry Substance List Updated to May 2026 Version — Now Available in CDX
The Rail Industry Substance List (RISL) has been updated to version 20 May 2026 and is now integrated into the Compliance Data eXchange (CDX) platform.
RISL is a reference list of prohibited and declarable substances developed specifically for the railway sector, maintained through collaboration between the International Union of Railways (UIC), the European Rail Industry Association (UNIFE) and other key rail organisations. The list reflects the latest developments in global chemical regulations affecting rail suppliers and manufacturers.
Each substance in the list is assigned one of two categories. Substances classified as P(AR) are prohibited within specific areas of restriction, meaning their use in defined applications is not permitted. Substances classified as D(FA) or D(FI) are declarable for assessment or information purposes, meaning suppliers must disclose their presence even where use is not outright banned.
The list covers regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions. For the European Economic Area, it references key legislation including REACH Annex XIV, REACH Annex XVII, RoHS, ELV, the Batteries Regulation and CLP. For the United Kingdom, it covers UK REACH, UK RoHS, UK POPs and ORRChem requirements. Beyond Europe, the list also addresses Canadian regulations including CEPA and SOR/2015-270, US requirements across multiple 40 CFR parts, as well as Australian and Swiss legislation.
Rail companies, suppliers and manufacturers operating across these jurisdictions can use the updated RISL within CDX to check substance compliance status, controlled applications and applicable legislation references in a single place.
