ECHA Call for Evidence: Battery Substances Study (EU 2023/1542)
The European Chemicals Agency has just launched a call for evidence to support a landmark study under the Batteries Regulation (EU 2023/1542). By the end of 2027, the European Commission must deliver a report identifying substances of concern in batteries that affect manufacturing, recycling, and end-of-life management.
ECHA is requesting specific data and evidence on substances currently from industry on:
- Substances currently used in batteries (chemical composition, concentrations)
- Environmental and health hazards these substances pose
- Recycling challenges they create (technical, cost, safety issues)
- Alternatives that already exist or are being developed
- Real-world data from your operations—manufacturing, use, end-of-life
Battery manufacturers, importers, recyclers, waste management operators, trade associations, suppliers, and downstream users are encouraged to participate. Organizations outside the EU with relevant data on the European battery market can also contribute.
The substances identified in this study will likely influence future regulatory decisions and requirements, so participating ensures your industry's voice shapes the outcome rather than having regulations imposed without your perspective.
