ECHA Launches Call for Evidence: Substances of Concern in Batteries

November 12, 2025

On November 12, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a call for evidence to support the preparation of a critical study report required under the Batteries Regulation. The European Commission is mandated to identify substances of concern in batteries—particularly those that may hamper recycling processes—by December 31, 2027. To meet this deadline, ECHA is now collecting technical data on substances used in manufacturing, present in finished batteries, or emitted during recycling.

This initiative seeks input from stakeholders across the entire battery supply chain, including manufacturers, recyclers, and downstream users. The collected evidence will be instrumental in future regulatory decisions aimed at minimizing environmental impacts and promoting circularity in the sector. Further details on the scope of the study and submission guidelines are available on the ECHA call for evidence page.
